I have an unhealthy addiction to social networking sites (facebook, myspace, livejournal, twitter, message boards, etc). I have decided to not use communication by internet with these forms for a maximum of a month if I can do it. who knows- i may give in tomorrow. i feel it has given me a false sense of entitlement and comradeship. Most importantly it has sealed me off from the world that i do not have a definate connection with.

The Smashing Pumpkins sue Virgin Records. GASP! [Mar. 25th, 2008|12:44 pm]

Smashing Pumpkins sue Virgin Records

Tue Mar 25, 8:29 AM ET

The Smashing Pumpkins are suing Virgin Records, saying the record label has illegally used their name and music in promotional deals that hurt the band's credibility with fans.

In a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, the rockers said they have "worked hard for over two decades to accumulate a considerable amount of goodwill in the eyes of the public," and that Virgin's use of the band in a "Pepsi Stuff" promotion with Amazon.com and Pepsi Co. threatens their reputation for "artistic integrity."

Virgin released the Smashing Pumpkins' music for more than 17 years, but the only active agreement between the two parties, the lawsuit claims, is a deal granting Virgin permission to sell digital downloads of the band's songs. The agreement does not give Virgin the right to use the band in promotional campaigns to sell outside products, the lawsuit said.

The band members said they would "never grant such authority to Virgin, or any other entity."

An after-hours call to Virgin Records wasn't immediately returned.

The lawsuit demands that Virgin pay with the profits earned in the promotion and asks for an injunction against using the Pumpkins' name or music in the future.

[Current Music |Radiohead - In Rainbows]

Recently I've been a big fan of Caribou's latest release, Andorra and The Weakerthans' new one, Reunion Tour.  That's where my ears have been taking me lately, but I've noticed some things the last couple of days within the large acts in rock'n roll:  specifically Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead.

Today marks the internet digital release of Radiohead's seventh LP, In Rainbows, which gave fans a welcome surprise when ordered:  you can enter the price of whatever you think it's worth to buy.  I'm sure the die-hard fans 'bought' the album (as did I) and have been munching on the release as I speak but there are thousands who no doubt did not buy it and entered '0' as the cost.  Either way, Radiohead has free license to execute this plan since their release from Capital records with 2003's Hail to the Thief  which gave them more critical and fan praise.  This seems like the next logical step with getting around the abuse that record companies and the RIAA have put on fans and recording artists alike.

After a somewhat publicized concert in Sydney, AU which Nine Inch Nails' frontman/only permanent fixture, Trent Reznor teared into the rediculous cd prices in between songs:

"Last time I was here, I was doing a lot of complaining about the ridiculous prices of CDs down here. And that story got picked up and got carried all around the world and now my record label all around the world hates me, because I yelled at them, I called them out for being greedy fucking assholes. I didn't get a chance to check, has the price come down at all? I see a no, a no, a no... Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means - STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these motherfuckers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that that's not right." (See video here)

NIN stated on it's website the following message:

"08 October 2007:
Big News
Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.
Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
Exciting times, indeed.
posted by Trent Reznor at 10:45 AM."

I have been seeing this coming for years.  We are headed to a new age of self-producing and self-distribution.  There are always people who still browse the record shops for new and personally undiscovered music (I am as much a part of that as you), but once again progress is heading toward the internet and the use of self-releasing material.  I am behind this push for Radiohead and NIN but I have yet to figure how small artists and yet-to-be supported artist fit in this mix.  It is expensive to front costs yourself for album pressings, tour, merch, etc.  You need to work your ass off to gain respect and name recognition in today's world.  Though I support fully the larger act rebellion this approach still fails mostly for the underdogs.

How are artists supposed to break in if the large influx of tried and true fail them?
Riddle me that, Batman.....

Montreal - What a Town. [Jul. 24th, 2007|01:05 pm]
[Current Location |Fort Kent/Montreal]
[Current Mood | lethargic]
[Current Music |The Moldy Peaches / Adam Green]

Well I unexpectedly went to the great Canadian city of Montreal Friday through yesterday (Sunday) and helped Nate The Great move his random shit (and his wife's stuff) into his huge new apartment.  On the first night in downtown Montreal we noticed that the Just For Laughs Festival was during the weekend and I noticed that Zach Galfikanopolishinkituswhatever was with a show bill with Jimmy Carr.  Neat stuff.  we missed the entire thing though and didn't have tickets to the monumentus city wide festival so Nate and I just walked up to the Bohemian ville area and while walking and talking Bob Odenkirk passed right by me with some friends of his.  I glanced back at Nate and quietly pointed him out without having a huge fanboy-ish approach to him.  I fucking love his past endevours and such and it made perfect sense that he'd he in the city during this time.  Anyways, here's my random song about the retarded encounter:

-----------------------------------------
Jilting on Down
Making the rounds
Beyond the downtown town of Montreal
Walking past whores
Walking past tourists
Acting like on of the hipsters

As we make our strides past The Plateau
Staring at signs that we purposely wouldn't know
I heard a voice that made me smirk

"Hey...I think I just saw...naw..WAIT- YEah!"
Bob Odenkirk
I think I just saw
Bob Odenkirk

Past all the bums
Bohemians- I've seen some
We cannot forget the sounds
Somking my butt
Sucking my gut
Trying to ignore Nate, The Great

He suddenly remembers the face
He's seen it and got a trace
At the same moment he started to smirk

"Fuck Yea!  You're right man, I know we just saw!"
Bob Odenkirk
I think we just saw
Bob Odenkirk

"what's he from though- some TV Show? or something"
"Some show with a name that has show in it"
"Tim and Eric Awesome Show?"
"Ohh yea!"

Can't get this thought out of my head
Tried thinking of something else instead
But his face look just like

Bob Odenkirk
"Damn straight, it was!"
Bob Odenkirk
"Ohh yeah -Mr. Show with David Cross and..."
Bob Odenkirk....

"Ohh Bob- where has your love gone too?"
-----------------------------------------

I'll record it this weekend most likely.

Another music project for download! [Jul. 12th, 2007|03:16 pm]
[Current Mood | artistic]
[Current Music |random garage rock.....]

So I had vacation last week and I hadn't practiced in a while and I accidentally brought my Fender Jazzmaster/Jaguar copy (electric guitar for you n00bs) with me while I spent the time home.  Realizing I had it with me i thought about playing it through my crappy 12 watt Crate practice amp I bought back in 2000 when I first started playing the electric guitar.  So while tinkering with the limited setup I found I could get an acceptable garage rock tone out of the sucker.  Then I remembered that my recording setup was around in the same room and other random guitar stuff I have that I don't usually use in my current setup in Fort Kent was in the same room.
Well.
I listened to alot of old garage rock tunes and some White Stripes, Black Keys, etc and decided to try to record some older garage rock tunes.....but with no real goals on sound, no preproduction, no structure.....every song was to follow a non-thought out guitar line without much thought on where the theme/tempo, etc was going.  After I layed down the first guitar I added a second and horribly simple/slapped together drum track using my Casio CTK-800 keyboard with the drumtones on.....so I was physically playing the bassdrum, symbols, snare, etc with my fingers hoping everything would sound ok.  I then added vocals with no real lyrical content rather than babbling into a microphone and creating vocal melody lines....which were all one takes.

I ended up with five songs in this fashion in the course of eight hours.  One day.  Saturday in fact; was killed.
So here you go folks.  the names of the tunes were assisted by my cousin xBx (what a gentleman).  He came up with a great name for the project:  The Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon.

The name is fantastic.  perhaps much better than the songs, but these tunes can be better in the future.  More to be on the way I'm sure when I get home next.  A Continuation????

The Smashing Pumpkins' "Zeitgeist" has leaked....review [Jun. 30th, 2007|09:53 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Music |The Smashing Pumpkins album "Zeitgeist"]

Well.
As most of you know, The Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite rock band/musical act ever.  Obviously not the best in anyway, but I'm a huge fan of the songs Billy Corgan has been able to spit out in all these past years.  Zwan and other side projects have always entertained me as well and I think Jimmy Chamberlin has always been able to knock anyone off the charts with his crazy jungle jazz rock drumming.  Well a week before the official release of The Smashing Pumpkins' latest incarnation (Zeitgeist) will be released, the internet has graciously intervened and handed the fans the album in usual mp3 format.  Here's a knock-out drag-out review of the tracks:

1.  "Doomsday Clock" - The intro and verses remind fans of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' track "Bodies" immediately, but not in a straight-forward manner.  The lyrics of "Is everyone afraid? / You should be ashamed" are incredibly amateurish as well as the struggling vocals before the last chorus of "You should want it all".  Overall an enjoyable track despite the lyrics.

2.  "7 Shades of Black" - Similar to "Doomsday Clock" in guitar and vocal approach but with perhaps the most interesting arrangement I've heard from Billy Corgan in way of song structure for a hard rock song.  Incredibly interesting in a way that leaves you actually wanting more than a three minute and seventeen second tune.

3.  "Bleeding the Orchid" - I've heard this on the recent prerelease tour and residencies the past month or so and I've come to the conclusion that the album version seems to lack energy.  Still a song that you can absorb quickly and may grow on fans in time.

4.  "That's the Way (My Love Is)" - Reminds me of "Wound" and "Untitled" as well as some Zwan material in ways of good arrangement and catchiness.  It's quite the pop-tune without heavy guitars, but driving Corgan vocals and Chamberlin drums.  So far one of my favorite songs from "Zeitgeist" and can compete with pop tunes Corgan has constructed in the past.

5.  "Tarantula" - The first leaked track and single of the newly reformed The Smashing Pumpkins and it's quite the winner.  I'm a big fan of the way Smashing Pumpkins tunes have been formulated in the past and this totally takes the cake in the hard-rock circuit.  Breakdowns are smooth and the solos are quite interesting with the pleasant breakdown near the end that reminds you of Cheap Trick or a hint of Scorpion fun.  The ending vocals add up the reoccurrence of the Corgan Machine with "If it's a white-hot soul they want, It's a black heart they'll get."

6.  "Starz" - Nothing special into this track until you get the vocal layering of "We are Stars" and you wonder what Queen record Billy indulged himself into.  It does get heavier and becomes some smooth area-rocker with up-tempo articulate choruses driven by Chamberlin's drumming.

7.  "United States" - Jimmy Chamberlin.  This is a pure track for Jimmy. Bar none drumming.  The track in itself is sort of tiring for an album full of radio-catchy ideas; though is energetic live and reveals classic Pumpkins in context of a jam-derived song.  The delay ridden guitar work in the middle seems incredibly useless and redundant.  The track is similar to "Glass and the Ghost Children" in context of oddly included tunes for an album.

8.  "Neverlost" - Similar in traditional Pumpkin song structure.  The song has a glockenspiel in the background as well as multiple organ/synths which for some reason reminds me of songs from Machina / the Machines of God or TheFutureEmbrace that I would rather not relive.  This is the first sing on the album where I found the almost un-audible bassline to be interesting.

9.  "Bring the Light" - Incredibly pop-rock.  Similar to "Nothing and Everything" (old demo song from late eighties) with the frantic chase feeling in the tune, with a crazy double tracked solo that highlights the album's use of catchy guitar hooks placed in the background.  Incredibly Boston sounding.

10.  "Come On (Let's Go)" - Reminds me of "Zero" mixed with a neat Thin Lizzy verse.  Some parts remind me of Machina II material like "White Spyder" in the bridge.  Also reminds me of some random area-rocking tunes.

11.  "For God and Country" -  I heard a version from the first show back from Paris, May 22nd and my god-  it sounds nothing like this album version.  Sort of a Machina sessions driven with synths and deep muffled bassline that reminds me of "In My Body" but popier.  And like some Machina songs- sound completely different than how fans first get to know the tunes.  Depeche Mode may have written this song once or twice...

12.  "Pomp and Circumstances" - Odd.  Different instrumentation than you may have ever heard for a Pumpkins song.  Slow and Waltz-like- the deep staccato-strings and resonate percussion sound like an actual depiction of "Pomp and Circumstance" some pit band may have played in the world.  The odd "La la la las" with guitar make the song an odd slow end cap that I can see as a mix of every song The Smashing Pumpkins have had as album closers.

Final First Review:
The Smashing Pumpkins are back; and have this time added a hint of mid-nineties nostalgia while still able deny overpowering the themes that Green Day was miraculously able to grab out of their ass with American Idiot.  Ridden with small amounts of political views (very small, but evident with the cd art as well as the horrid SP flag design) as well as the usual apocalyptic material the album is oddly mixed with reminiscent Zwan ideals in the later half of the track list.  Most of the rockier tunes can be related to MCIS era jams as the synth tunes seem to be left over Machina themes.  Lyrics overall are tiring for the first time in years for Corgan (odd for a man who's best vocal/lyrical work stems from the last four years...and I’m not talking about TheFutureEmbrace) and vocals are concentrated for balanced attack while the panning of mounted chorus lines make an impression that Corgan wanted to be in the group Boston years ago.  Although the layered vocals are welcome, the album is heavily reliant on them as well as nuance effects, synths, and random 'beeps and boops'.  The live versions of a percentage of these tunes work incredibly well with mixed Pumpkin tunes but suffer as a new album.  Zeitgeist lacks dynamics that TSP, The Pixies, and other bands exploited so well along with the screaming and energetic primal screams that Corgan once exerted so easily.  Age has most likely push the yelling into retirement (used rarely for a hit like "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" live) while Corgan has learned from his Zwan / Djali Zwan years that he doesn't necessarily have to scream to get his message across.  The basslines are almost lost in the sea of guitars, which doesn't surprise me whatsoever unfortunately.

Overall this album is quite enjoyable and can top 2000's Machina / the Machines of God quite easily.  I'm just glad there's no horrible clipping due to mastering (IE see Machina and Zwan's Mary Star of the Sea) and I am delighted that Corgan is once again writing radio-friendly pop rock songs.  The new lineup of Billy Corgan (vocals + lead guitar), Jimmy Chamberlin (percussion), Ginger Reyes (vocals + bass), Jeff Schroeder (guitar), and Lisa Harrington (keyboard) are as solid as the Pumpkins have surprisingly EVER been live- cranking out classic Pumpkin tunes as well rehashing oddities than only hardcore fans may remember ("Translucent" !!!).  For a band that's only played 20+ shows in a month together live, The Smashing Pumpkins are using Zeitgeist to pave the way through the uneasy state of rock and roll today and proving their relevance in today’s music.

Corgan and Chamberlin have burned the lies off my soul and crushed me into dust with Metal.  Thanks Boys.

8/10 so far....
